Wooden covers covered with leather; both hardcovers are decorated in the same way: with imprints of cutter and roulette; with metal bindings (lumps and squares) and remains of two clips. It was bound approximately at the end of XVI – XVII c. |

|
Gothic, of liturgical books. Written in brown and black ink. The text is rubricated with cinober, decorated with blue and red initials. There are lombards in black. There are corrections, rubbings, as well as chants inscribed much later in a different script. |

11. Decoration (Iliumination)
|
Decoration of red and blue filigree initials of two sizes dominates which shows the obvious influence of the French school. Initials are decorated very skilfully. Decoration of lombards is different and made by unskilful hand. The multi-coloured flora ornament belongs to a different style and period and is painted in tempera in the margins of fol. 62v. There is a two-coloured (red and black) initial on fol. 206. |

13. Document Condition
|
Satisfactory. Defects: according to the original numeration the title folio and the first 17 folios are missing. Folios are torn slightly in many places; the corners of folios are worn out because of the frequent use. Rents are stitched up with thread; the corners are glued over with paper or parchment. |

2. Provenance
|
1. The inside of the first hardcover has a Vilnius Public Library wafer (ex libris) with the old signature (there is an inscription in the rectangular ornamented border, bellow the coat-of-arms of Czar Russia: Bилeнскaя Публичнaя БИБЛIOТEКА, A.46 1/1).
2. There is the seal of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (purple ink) on the top margin of folio 1 and the old signature with the conventional sign indicating the big format of the manuscript (103.Bx-Df).
3. There is a seal of Manuscript Department of Vilnius Public Library (with the coat-of-arms of Czar Russia in the centre of the round border and the following inscription in a circle: БИБЛIOТEКИ PYKOПИC. BИЛEH.) on the bottom margin of folio 1.
4. The seals mentioned above are repeated on the last folio of the gradual (fol. 223v.). |

3. History
|
It is still a question of discussions whether the gradual was rewritten in scriptorium of Vilnius Bernardine Monastery or brought from a foreign country as a present to the Monastery. Although there are no documents of evidence (e.g. provenance), it is thought that the manuscript belonged to the Library of Vilnius Bernardine Monastery. Later (1867-1918) the gradual was brought to the Manuscript Department of Vilnius Public Library. In 1915 it was taken to Russia together with other treasures of the library and stored at USSR National V.I. Lenin Library of Moscow. After World War II it was given back to Lithuania and handed to Manuscript Department of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. It was ascribed to the collection according to the conditional title – the remains of the manuscripts archives of Vilnius Public Library (F22). |
