11. Decoration (Iliumination)
|
The antiphonal has red and blue filigree initials of two sizes as a dominating decoration. Some of the initials have no decoration. In addition to the common red and blue colouring, green filigree ornament is apparent on some red and blue initials. Besides there are several light cherry-coloured initials, decorated with a green ornament.
The most ornate initial is at the bottom of folio 4r: capital letter "a" with motives of acanthus leaves incorporated into golden background in the blue frame. The cherry-coloured inside is filled with the French "quadrillé" motive with four-leafed small flowers painted in a more intensive purple and golden colour. There is a green-light blue-light cherry-coloured string of acanthus leaves going from the initial to the corner of the folio. It is rhythmically divided and decorated with golden dots and drops. Because of its colours and asymmetry of decoration this décor resembles late Polish Gothic tradition.

Satisfactory. Defects: according to the earlier numeration, the title folio and folios 1, 2, 93, 94, 95 are missing. Folios are torn in many places; several margins are cut off (folios 30, 44, 79 - together with parts of the text); the corners of folios are worn out due to the frequent use. |

2. Provenance
|
1. The outside part of the upper hardcover bears a wafer with number "22" on it.
2. The inside of the first hardcover has a Vilnius Public Library wafer (ex libris) with the old signature (there is an inscription in the rectangular ornamented border, bellow the coat-of-arms of Czar Russia: Bилeнскaя Публичнaя БИБЛIOТEКА, A.46 1/1).
3. On the top margin of folio 1r there is the seal of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (purple ink) and the old signature with the conventional sign indicating the big format of the manuscript (103.Bx-Df).
4. On the bottom margin of folio 1r there is a seal of Manuscript Department of Vilnius Public Library (with the coat-of-arms of Czar Russia in the centre of the round border and the following inscription in a circle: БИБЛIOТEКИ PYKOПИC. BИЛEH.).
5. The seals mentioned above are repeated on the last folio of the antiphonal (fol. 105v.).

3. History
|
Historiography indicates that the present antiphonal was rewritten and illuminated by monk Ambrosius de Clodava in Vilnius Bernardine Monastery scriptorium. Later (1867-1918) the antiphonal was brought to the Manuscript Department of Vilnius Public Library. In 1915 it was taken to Russia together with other treasures of the library and stored at USSR National V.I. Lenin Library of Moscow. After World War II (between 1946-1952) it was brought back to Lithuania and handed to Manuscript Department of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. It was ascribed to the collection with the conditional title – the remains of the manuscripts archives of Vilnius Public Library (F22). |
