Answers to questions included in a field research questionnaire
Textile patterns and colors answered by 213
respondents and compiled by the author in
19911995, as well as graphic pictures, serve as the main sources of the present research. Out of
213 respondents, 200 claimed to be Lithuanians, eight Poles,
one Belorussian, one person represented the Klaipėda area, one
Latvian, one Prussian ethnic consciousness and one person did not
state his nationality. They were born in the first (50), second (63) and third (54) decades of this century, and females formed the majority. In the course of the analysis of
textile ornamentation and meaning, references are made to the author's descriptions of weaving work, the type and the purpose of the fabric, colour, patterns and ornamentation. Also valuable new data found at the Lithuanian Institute of History Ethnology Department Manuscript Section,
the Kaunas District Archive, Vilnius University, and the Martynas Mažvydas National Library, in
Mikalina Glemžaitė's, Kazimiera Kairiukštytė's, Juozas Petrulis's and Ona Banionytė's manuscripts,
was used. Exhibits in the Lithuanian National and Art museums,
the Mykalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Art Museum, Švencionys
'Nalšia' and other folk art museums, as well as comparative data from Warsaw, Paris, Stockholm, Melbourne,
and Munster museum collections, was of great importance, and contributed very much to the
research.
